World Hearing Day is held on March 3 each year to raise awareness of how to prevent deafness and hearing loss.

This year the theme is ear and hearing care for all – let’s make it a reality and it aims to highlight the importance of this in primary care around the world.

The key messages this year are:

1 Ear and hearing problems are among the most common problems encountered in the community.
2 Over 60% of these can be identified and addressed at the primary level of care.
3 Integration of ear and hearing care into primary care services is possible through training and building capacity at this level.
4 Such integration will benefit people and help countries move towards the goal of universal health coverage.

Check hearing regularly

One of the key aims of World Hearing Day – which is organised by the World Health Organisation – is to tell people about the importance of looking after their ears and hearing.

And it offers these tips to help care for your hearing:

1 Use earplugs in noisy places
2 Check your hearing regularly
3 Wear your hearing aids regularly when advised
4 See a doctor if you have ear or hearing problems
5 Don’t put cotton buds, oil, sticks or pins inside your ears
6 Don’t swim or wash in dirty water
7 Don’t share earphones or earplugs
8 Don’t listen to loud sounds or noisy music

Encouraging governments to integrate ear and hearing care into training programmes for health care providers at primary level is also an important aim.
